A series of 11 astronomy tours each packaged with classical music by Reno Philharmonic players, the tasting of wines from around the globe with knowledgeable presenters from each domain, sample appetizers from leading area restaurateurs and chefs, round trip transportations to viewing areas and the casual yet upscale lodging fulfill this package’s alliteratively named promise.
Astronomer and poet Tony Berendsen of the Nevada Science Coalition will guide each evening of the series with two hours of laser-guided star gazing. Among the highlights are three spectacular meteor showers: Orinoid, a trail left behind by Halley's Comet; Leonids, an annual meteor shower associated with the Tempel-Tuttle comet; and December's Geminids, the most prolific display with usually more than 50 meteors per hour.
The “Stars, Strings and Sipping” series begins at Lake Tahoe, Saturday, Sept. 29 with the program, Uranus in Opposition. Guests will be treated to the rare opportunity to view the blue-green planet when it appears closest to Earth than at any other time of the year, complemented with wine and gourmet food pairings, as well as tips on the best astronomy apps found on smart phones. Other series highlights will include ample star-gazing from Lake Tahoe with the Moon in"New" Phase, Oct. 15; Orinoid Meteor Shower from Lake Tahoe, Oct. 21 and from Carson Valley, Oct. 22; A New Moon star gaze from Lake Tahoe on Nov. 13; Leonid Meteor Showers from Lake Tahoe, Nov. 17 and Carson Valley, Nov. 18; viewing of the Blue Snowball Nebula from Lake Tahoe, November 27; Jupiter at Opposition at Lake Tahoe, Dec. 3; Geminids Meteor Shower from Carson Valley, Dec. 13 and from Lake Tahoe, Dec. 14.
